The BBC report reflects what many of our members know:
Adoptive families risk reaching breaking point because they can’t get the right support at the right time. Children who have experienced trauma, loss and disrupted relationships need families who receive consistent, joined-up help that understands the impacts. Too often, it isn’t there.
We Are Family builds community support, which makes a difference. Our communities are rooted in lived experience, building spaces in which people can see themselves represented. Families rely on our peer-led groups, webinars, resources and talks because they offer practical help and reduce isolation. These spaces give parents somewhere to talk openly about what they are dealing with.
The rise in adoption breakdowns demonstrates the extent to which too many families are expected to manage alone.. Families shouldn’t have to wait for a crisis before action is taken, and cuts to specialist services make things more complicated for households already managing complex needs.
We will continue to offer free support across our network, informed by the voices of adoptive parents and their families. We also support calls for a stronger commitment to early help, better access to therapeutic services, and a better understanding of the adoptive experience across public services.
Any adoptive parent, prospective adopter or member of their support network can access our resources and reach out when they need support: https://wearefamilyadoption.org.uk/join/.
