We Are Family is a peer to peer support community by adopters, for adopters.  We exist due to the generosity of our incredible volunteers.  In this section you will hear from adopters about why and how they got involved, the importance of volunteers to our community, ways to get involved and the types of volunteer roles available, plus how to get in touch if you’re interested in volunteering.

If you’re not an adopter or member of We Are Family you can still get involved in supporting our community.  Check out some of the volunteer roles below or apply here and we’ll be in touch!

We’re looking for members to join two of our working groups which have been set up to address specific areas of WAF’s programmes and activities and to make recommendations to the board of trustees for consideration.

The time commitment involves attending up to 4 online meetings per year (approximately 1.5hrs per meeting) and potentially some work between meetings, such as reading reports or reviewing documents.

Communications Working Group:

If you’re interested in how We Are Family communicates with our members and external audiences or perhaps your current or previous work focussed on communications we’d love to hear from you. This working group will develop a communication strategy, establish a tone of voice and image policy for WAF communications, and create opportunities for engagement within and beyond our community.

Groups Working Group:

You may be a current group volunteer, or a member interested in how We Are Family local and themed groups work to support our members on their adoption journey.  This working group will look at planning and supporting the development of current and new groups as well as the recruitment of volunteers and how we support volunteers to do the amazing things they do for We Are Family.

For more information, or for an informal chat about getting involved email Sophie and Renee: hello@wearefamilyadoption.org.uk

Adoption is the most rewarding but also the most challenging journey. Being part of WAF from an early point meant we felt listened to and most importantly, not alone. Being a WAF volunteer has enabled me to give back to one of the most authentic and special communities out there.

Run in partnership with Connect Peer Support, We Are Family’s bespoke Peer Support Facilitator Training ensures that all our facilitators have the skills and resources to provide compassionate peer-led support groups. This dynamic 12-hour training programme, delivered via Zoom, is a masterclass in how to create warm, open spaces alongside peers.

In addition to training, all facilitators are invited to join our monthly Supervision programme which provides regular external support to maintain and promote volunteer wellbeing.

Training and Supervision is delivered by Anne Ford of Connect Peer Support, MSW, MBACP, a Clinical Social Worker (psychotherapist) by training, who has 40 years of experience in developing and delivering training in peer programmes.

Membership to We Are Family is free, and it always will be.

With the generous support from our partners, funders and donations from supporters, We Are Family provide our members with access to the highest calibre of experts, resources and peer support services, at the time when we need it most.

Join us and become part of the family.

I have gained so much from being a We Are Family volunteer. As well as making new contacts and meeting people from different walks of life, I get the chance to use my professional skills from my previous working life in education to run activities.

I really enjoy supporting other adopters , building relationships with them and sharing experiences of parenting. Seeing the positive impact my volunteering has on their lives is extremely fulfilling and gives me a real buzz!
